Making Meds a Treat, Not a Treat-ment: Gentle Ways to Get Your Dog On Board

It warms my heart to talk about training your furry friend to love their very own dog bed. Believe it or not, some dogs are really hesitant to use their dog bed. It took our editor’s pup months to finally nap on his super comfy dog bed because it was new, and sometimes new things are scary. Now it’s one of his favorite things to do!

Because a dog bed is more than just a cozy spot; it's their personal sanctuary, a place where they can feel safe, secure, and truly at home. Let's embark on this rewarding journey together!

Sit & Stay Pro Tip — Embrace Bed-Time

Think of the dog bed as your pup's special retreat. Just like we cherish our comfy couches and soft pillows, our dogs deserve a space that's all theirs. Training them to use it isn't just about convenience; it's about providing them with a sense of belonging and a haven they can rely on.

Now, how do we gently guide our four-legged companions to embrace their plush paradise? Patience and positive reinforcement are your best allies here. Forget any notions of forcing or scolding; we want this to be a happy association.

Here's a step-by-step approach to make the dog bed the most desirable spot in the house:

Introduce the Bed Positively

Let your dog explore the bed at their own pace. Place it in a common area where they already spend time, so it feels like a natural part of their environment. Sprinkle a few treats or their favorite toys on the bed to create an immediate positive connection. Let them sniff, paw at it, and wander on and off without any pressure.

Lure Them Onto the Bed

Once your dog is comfortable being around the bed, use a high-value treat to lure them onto it. Hold the treat near their nose and guide them onto the bed. As soon as all four paws are on the bed, shower them with praise and give them the treat. Repeat this several times in short, fun sessions.

Associate a Cue Word

As your dog starts to go onto the bed more readily, introduce a simple cue word like "Bed," "Place," or "Cozy." Say the cue word as they are in the process of getting onto the bed, and then reward them. Consistency is key here!

Extend the Duration

Gradually increase the amount of time your dog stays on the bed before receiving a reward. Start with a few seconds and slowly build up to a minute or two. Continue to offer praise and treats to reinforce their calm behavior on the bed.

Generalize the Behavior

Once your dog reliably goes to their bed in the initial location, start practicing in different rooms of the house. This helps them understand that "Bed" means their specific bed, no matter where it is.

Make it Extra Inviting

Enhance the appeal of the bed by placing a familiar-smelling blanket or one of your worn t-shirts on it. This can provide extra comfort and security, especially if your dog experiences any anxiety.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • If your dog seems hesitant: Don't rush the process. Instead, simply reward them for being near the bed and gradually work your way up.

  • If your dog gets off the bed too soon: Gently guide them back onto it and reward them for staying a little longer.

  • Avoid using the bed for punishment: You want your dog to associate their bed with positive experiences, not negative ones.

After all that love (and lots of treats), you’ll soon find your furry companion happily retreating to their cozy haven for some well-deserved rest. And seeing them curled up in their own special spot? Well, that's a heartwarming reward in itself!

Vet Recommendation — How to Pick a Good Bed

Vets often recommend investing in a quality dog bed that supports your dog's specific needs and promotes restful sleep. Orthopedic beds, particularly those with memory foam, are excellent for senior dogs or those with arthritis or joint issues, as they cushion pressure points and improve comfort. For dogs with chewing tendencies, look for durable, chew-resistant options like elevated beds with sturdy frames and tough fabric. Consider your dog's size, sleeping style, and any specific health conditions when selecting to ensure they have a comfortable and supportive space to rest and recharge.
