🐶 Begging Begone! 🐶

It’s hard to resist those puppy dog eyes. Even if your pup isn’t a vocal beggar, begging can still be a nuisance. Especially with the holidays approaching and new humans (or at least humans they see less often) coming around, it’s good to banish begging altogether.

Keep in mind that breaking these habits isn’t just on your pup — it’s on you and the other humans in their lives too. After all, dogs need persistence. If only one person in a household of four withholds tasty human food, then they still have three other people to beg from.

Sit & Stay Pro Tip — Pup Food Only

The most important thing you can do to help your dog be successful in their begging begone journey is to be consistent. If you decide they don’t get any more human food, that means they can’t have any more human food from anyone — guests included. This will help break the association they have with you eating to them getting a snack.

After all, if you give in to their whining or unbreakable staring, they’ll think they’re being rewarded. It’s a challenge we know all too well, but we believe in you!

Here are some other tips to help banish begging once and for all:

  • Feed Fido First: An easy way to divert your dog’s attention is to feed them before yourself. Once they’ve eaten, they’re more likely to settle and less likely to beg like they haven’t eaten in 84 years.

  • Don’t Engage: Ignore your dog completely when they’re exhibiting begging behavior. Yes, that even means not telling them to stop. No looking or speaking to them at all.

  • Positive Reinforcement: After you’re done eating, if your dog hasn’t begged, give them a well-earned treat. Praise their good behavior while giving them their reward.

  • Keep Your Pup Elsewhere During Meals: This means keeping them out of the dining area. You could put up a gate or guide them to a cozy snooze in their crate, for instance. Whatever is amenable to your dog and you.

Vet Recommendation — Be Patient

Breaking a begging cycle with your dog can take a while, so it’s important to be patient with your pup. Begging becomes a habit and, just like with humans, won’t be broken in one day. This process may take a few weeks or even a few months. Just stick with it!
