Some dog breeds are more prone to digging than others, and some dogs just like to dig. The most crucial factor to consider when trying to keep your dog from journeying to the center of the earth is why.
Here are some common reasons you might have the digging-est dog.
Keen sense of hearing. If a mole is underground, your dog will know, and the chase is on.
Storage. Your dog may be hiding something extremely valuable – like a sock or an old bone.
Heat. If your dog is outside when it’s hot, they may burrow to rest in cooler soil.
Stress or boredom. Dogs develop bad habits due to stress and boredom, just like we do. Excessive digging can be the canine equivalent of biting fingernails.

Sit & Stay Pro Tip – How to Keep Your Dog from Digging
If you’re tired of replanting rose bushes and twisting ankles, help is here.
Problem: Animals Underground
Solution: There are two ways to go about this. You can focus on the pests, or you can focus on the dog. Use repellants, traps, or barriers to keep moles, gophers, etc. away from your yard. Keep your dog from digging by going outside with them and firmly saying no when they begin so they understand it’s unacceptable behavior. It always helps if you can offer an alternative behavior.
Problem: Hiding Items
Solution: Create a digging zone for your dog. This could be a sandbox or an area with loose soil your dog can dig in. Again, there is no lazy way to teach your dog the difference between where they can and cannot dig. You’ll have to go out with them, reward them when they dig in the designated spot, and give a firm no when they begin digging elsewhere.
Problem: The Heat
Solution: Ensure your dog has shade and water when outdoors. You may even consider offering access to a kiddie pool to help them stay comfortable.
Problem: Restless Energy
Solution: The best way to keep your dog from feeling bored or anxious is to keep them occupied. Be sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise and interaction with you (their favorite person). Also, if they spend time alone in the yard, leave plenty of toys and activities to keep them busy and happy.
As always, if none of these explanations seem to fit, or your dog isn’t responding to our training tips, it’s worth contacting a certified in-home dog trainer. They can dig up the dirt on your dog’s problematic behavior.

Product of the Week: Virtual Dog Training

Training when you need it, where you need it!
One-on-one dog training is the most effective means to address severe behavioral problems like anxiety, house training, and leash reactivity
However, in-home training with a professional dog trainer can be expensive, and finding a time that works for everyone can be difficult. Virtual Leash offers the same benefits as in-home dog training with a lower price tag and more flexibility.
