Sit & Stay Pro Tip — Dog-Friendly Easter Egg Hunt

A dog-friendly Easter egg hunt is a great way for your dog to practice nose work. Nose work means training your dog to recognize and locate different scents. To set up an Easter Egg Hunt for your dog, fill a bunch of plastic eggs with kibble (like YumWoof’s Perfect Kibble), and scatter them around your yard or home just like you would when setting up a regular Easter egg hunt.

Of course, as with any training game, you want to make sure your dog knows what to do before letting them off the leash.

The Well-Mannered Dog suggests the following steps when training your dog to understand the Easter egg nose work game:

  1. Close the kibble-filled egg and hold it in your hand.

  2. Let the dog sniff it.

  3. Open the egg and give them the food.

  4. Repeat several times, then place the egg on the ground.

  5. When this seems too easy for your dog, scatter them around the yard.

  6. When that seems too easy, you’re free to hide the eggs.

Nose work isn’t just for K-9s. This exercise can help any dog stay active, mentally stimulated, and confident. The American Kennel Club even holds scent work competitions. Interested in learning more? Click here.
