It’s that time again! Either you’ll be handing out candy to ghosts and goblins, walking around with ghosts and goblins, or turning your lights off and avoiding the whole shebang.

If you’re in one of the first two categories, you may have given some consideration to how you’ll include your dog in the festivities. If you have an outgoing pup, you might want to walk them around the neighborhood in costume. If you have a more anxious pup, you may wonder how to keep them from getting stressed out whenever the doorbell rings.

We’ve got a few Sit & Stay Pro Tips to help you and your dog have lots of fun – and stay safe – this Halloween.

Sit & Stay Pro Tips – Halloween Help

  1. Keep Fido away from the treat bowl. 🍬

Chocolate, raisins, and xylitol are toxic to pets. You may not always be able to tell what’s in a piece of candy, so consider having a separate bowl of safe and healthy dog treats for your dog and those who are trick-or-treating.

  2. Use a fake candle in the Jack-o-Lantern. 🎃

If you’ve got a hyperactive pup, consider that when choosing your décor. If there’s a chance that lit decorations might get knocked over, battery-operated tea lights are an excellent alternative.

  3.  Consider a microchip or GPS collar. 📡

We’ve met plenty of canine escape artists, and Halloween is a perfect time for them to do the same thing they try to do every night, Pinky. When the door is opening and closing constantly, or your dog is on a leash around a ton of distractions, microchipping or purchasing something like the FitBark GPS tracker offers peace of mind.

  4. Make sure your dog has a safe space. 🛌

If your dog is properly crate trained, they’ll view the space as a quiet retreat rather than a prison. Especially nervous, hyperactive, or aggressive dogs may be happiest locked in their crate for a few hours when the festivities peak.
