🍂 Crunching leaves but not with teeth!🍂

Believe it or not, it is very common for pups to eat leaves. Even if your dog hasn’t done it in the past, they could start at any time — our newsletter editor’s dog started at the age of 9.

A crunchy leaf to bite might be extra tantalizing, especially for pups who love an autumn crunchy leaf under their paw. But don’t worry; you can help keep leaves off the fall menu.

Keep reading for expert tips on how to stop leaf-eating.

Sit & Stay Pro Tip — Disrupt Leaf Snacktime

There are three best ways to stop leaves from being your dog’s favorite snack:

  1. Overseeing. Keep an eye on your pup, particularly on walks when passing fallen or hanging leaves. If you see your dog start to approach or get interested in a leaf, intervene before it grabs one.

  2. Redirect. Once the leaf has their attention, it’s time to redirect. Give your pup a firm “no” or “no leaf” (which works for our editor). You can distract them with a treat or toy if you have one or gently pull the leash and their attention to you. If they grab a leaf anyway, give another firm “no” while gently taking it away from them if you can.

  3. Stimulate. If your dog is munching leaves in your yard during playtime, they could just be bored. A simple solution here is to ensure they have enough enrichment available so they don’t have to chew leaves to entertain themselves. Introduce a new toy or give them something like a treat puzzle to occupy their attention. Stimulated dogs are happy dogs!
